Watch: Ryan Dempster throws at Alex Rodriguez, hits him on second try

Alex Rodriguez, Ryan Dempster

The Red Sox had already taken a 2-0 lead on CC Sabathia and the Yankees in the first inning of their series finale in Boston Sunday night when  Alex Rodriguez, hitting fifth for the Yankees, led off the top of the second against Ryan Dempster. See above for what transpired.

That GIF shows Dempster’s first pitch, which was behind Rodriguez’s legs, and his fourth, which hit Rodriguez in the left elbow. The two pitches in between were also balls inside, but not close enough to hit Rodriguez.

Home plate umpire Brian O’Nora immediately, and demonstrably, warned both benches, prompting Yankees manager Joe Girardi to fly out of the dugout and into a rage. His fit was presumably about Dempster not being thrown out immediately for clearly throwing at Rodriguez, though possibly about how the Yankee bench was warned as a result of Dempster’s actions. Instead it was Girardi who was tossed, the only person on either team to have been run as a result of the incident.

Rodriguez had no overt reaction to the plunking, but the Yankees rallied after the hit-by-pitch to tie up the game. In his next at-bat, which proceeded normally, Rodriguez drove in the go-ahead run without a groundout to put the Yankees ahead, briefly, 3-2.

Thus far, with the game in the fourth inning, there have been no further incidents.

Update: In his third at-bat, Rodriguez led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to straight-away center off Dempster. The blast pulled the Yankees to within 6-4.

This is one of the reasons why the DH is such a bad idea.  Time for AL pitchers to face retribution as they do in the NL.  I am a Giants fan, but I have to say I have new found admiration for Greinke after watching him man up and get plunked in that testy game between the Dodgers and the Dbacks.

Who made Dumpster the judge, jury and executioner of MLB. I would have loved to seen CC hit big sappy for pay back. before they took him out,  Let the players police the game,a hit batter for a hit batter. Dumpster once again proved how gutless he is!

Dumpster was a jerk.  Ump was wrong.  Girardi was right.  A-Rod might or might not be guilty of lots of things, but he didn't deserve a sucker punch from The Dumpster.  I wanted someone to sling a bat very close to his head.  Not to HIT him, of course.  Just to establish an "inside bat sling."

Amazing what cowards are on these boards defending a coward move. REAL men dont "sucker punch" which is exactly what a pitcher is doing by intentionally hitting a batter. What a puss move.

I'm not a Yankee or A-Rod fan but Dempster should have been tossed! Girardi was 100% right that the ump should have warned him on the first pitch and thrown him out on the fourth. Farrell would have been better to keep his mouth shut than trying to claim that Dempster was just trying to establish his fastball. Both Dempster and Farrell show they have no class!

Too bad A-Rod didn't stand there and watch the home run like Ortiz does. Glad the Yankees stuck it to Dempster by pulling the game out!

The problem with allowing A-Rod to play is the insult to players like Musial, who A-Rod just passed in career RBIs, and Mays, who he is eleven homers from tying career mark of 660. Selig needs to ban him and if he will not act, the New York Yankees need to bench him, for the good of baseball. Sometimes, the greater good overrules trying to win a few baseball games . Either Selig or the Yankees need to step forward and get rid of A-Rod.

A-Rod on being hit: "That was unprofessional and silly."

===========================

I'm a Yanks fan and I think ANYONE doing 'roids is unprofessional and silly. But you should have just stood at home plate and admired the homer, just like that other roid fool....ortiz

Fans want to see their players come back from a serious injury, example Derek Jeter and Alex R, and Big Poppy (Bosox) well point is if they get the so called "the juice" maybe Derek would be playing and the Yankees would be in !st place. they ar being paid alot of money to play, I would like my players back asap. probably I have the wrong concept but I'm sure there are a few this thinks this way

I just love how none of the Yankees players seemed particularly concerned about a teammate getting deliberately beamed.

Somehow I suspect it had something to do with the particular player involved.

Now... If every major league pitcher would simply pitch to hit him it would allow the players to take care of the issue themselves. Nothing like early retirement via a bean to the head. He should get out while he at least isn't suffering from a baseball induced mental illness.

As a Red Sox fan I say, too, that hitting A-Rod was a bonehead move. He sent the message on the first pitch. Then get him out.

MLB needs to get the hearings on A-Rod going. It's a circus that's making a mockery of every game he appears in

You know you screwed up when you make people sympathetic toward A-Rod. What a bonehead move by Dumpster.

This whole ARod thing has turned into a witch hunt.  He is an easy target (no pun intended) but he is obviously not the only one juicing.  Why wasn't the pitcher thrown out, he had obviously already taken a shot at ARod and missed and then took another.  Pretty chicken shi* to me.

Yeah, it takes some kind of big man to stand 60 feet away from a guy and throw hard objects at him. You want to prove something? You want to "send a message"? Then stand up and defeat the guy on the field of play, like a man, instead of throwing things like a petulant five-year-old.

What childish, bush league crap.

Another classless move by Beantown's Bush League Champions. Glad to see A-Roid got his revenge against Dumpster later in the game, with a great homerun that got The New York Yankees moving.

Beanings create too  many problems and they don't work . if you want to beat a team, do it by your fielding and batting. Regarding beanings - don't forget Tony C. 46 years ago TODAY, playing for the Red Sox. A   G R E A T player whose career and life never recovered. RIP Tony C.

I hope every pitcher in the league throws at A-Roid until he quits the game. The best message his Yankee team mates could send would be to not retaliate. Let the rat be beaned.

@bcrd500 Thank you for stepping up and saying what needed to be said . Sit him and show the fans what real integrity looks like. For AFraud to even use the word unprofessional shows him for the hypocrite he really is. Each word that escapes his lips just elevates Jeter to a higher status on how it is done.

@HiramEberhardt but that's his only saving grace, for all intents and purposes, he plays the game and doesn't clown people/rub stuff in people's faces. he easily could have talked smack, stood there for a minute, laughed, pointed whatever, but he hit it and ran the bases.

@leehwgoc obviously didn't watch the game. Girardi was losing his mind, both teams came out, and when he hit the homer, everyone was hi fiving him, celebrating. The game was too close to get our starting pitcher ejected or put another run on base.

@leehwgoc The benches cleared and the relief pitchers came in from the bullpen. That's gotta count for something.

@DalePearl because that's equally as classy. I want to explain to my kids the whole steroid thing AND why it's ok for pitchers to deliberately hurt people to end careers. you're smart.

@GO22JETS I will never forget the sight of Tony getting nailed by Jack Hamilton.  I am a lifelong Red Sox fan and I am disgusted by Dempster's bush move last night.

Excellent point, GO22JETS. Mi am a lifelong Yankees fan and was and still am horrified by what happened to Tony C.

I truly hope the Yankees rise above Dumpster's bushball and do not retaliate against anyone else on his team.

@WilyCoyoteSuperGenius Don't be a sap. You believe every thing MLB has conveniently leaked to the media to make A-Rod look bad, don't you. We have witnesses that say A-Rod went to Victor Conte to get LEGAL supplements, but lemme guess, you don't believe that report, right?  Ask yourself this, where is the positive drug test? That's what they need right? You can't be suspended because your name appears on a list. Those other guys confessed because I'm betting they don't have the money to fight this legally. And if none got a call from another team, well how can a scrub claim he's being singled out if he sucks. If MLB had a smoking gun they would have leaked it by now. Instead, they're only leaking smoke and mirrors

@WilyCoyoteSuperGenius You are really a piece of Sh*t. You are no fan of baseball to wish players to hit others no matter how much hate you have for them.

@ITATTRACTS @leehwgoc Obviously weren't there. I was and I can tell you for absolute certain that while the Yankees coaches all came out (not just Girardi, so I'll give you that), none of the Yankees players came out to defend him. Literally was in the stands. Literally that's what happened. Don't know what game you were watching.
