Pennant race standings and projected postseason matchups: September 18

If the season ended today, Pennant Race Standings, Pennant races

Standings updated through all the games of Tuesday, September 17.

NOTE: For the remainder of the regular season, The Strike Zone will have a daily post updating the standings relevant to the postseason races. The positive numbers under Games Behind for the wild-card leaders indicate their lead over the third-place team in the race, or how far they are from being knocked out of a playoff spot. The Elimination Number (E#) column indicates the total number of the given team’s losses and leading team’s wins needed to eliminate that team from the race (essentially the reverse of a magic number). The magic number of the leading team is the elimination number of the second-place team. Postseason Odds are from ClayDavenport.com and will be updated in the mornings only.

I would have preferred one wild card team playing the team with the best record but not getting any home games. THAT also would have given the division winner a major advantage.

Of course, If I could be the king of baseball I would change it big time. I would remove all divisions but still keep two 15 team leagues. After 120 games, I would stop the season. Divide the leagues into 3 groups 1) Top 8 teams from the AL, 2) Top 8 teams from the NL and 3) the remaining 14 teams.

The last 42 games (120 + 42 = 162) would be played as follows:

Group 1 (The AL Top 8) would play each other 6 times, 3 home and 3 away.

Group 2 (The NL Top 8) would play each other 6 times, 3 home and 3 away.

Group 3 (The rest) Could play each other 3 times each for a total of 39 games plus one more 3 games series.

The winner of Group 1 would play the winner of Group 2 in the World Series. We would have a World Series in early October when it is at least comfortable and not freezing.

The cons of this system is scheduling but the positives are the best teams will play each other and not play the weak teams. The teams that are not in competition will be able to play young players without affecting the integrity of the pennant race.

@ClaytonCourtney _Boy- The attendance at those Group 3 games would really be something, wouldn't it?  (What time is the game tomorrow?  What time can you get here?)
