Watch: Dodgers anger D-backs by celebrating NL West title in Chase Field pool

The Dodgers clinched the National League West title on Thursday by beating the second-place Diamondbacks in their ballpark, Chase Field. Their initial celebration was typical: an on-field scrum followed by locker room champagne showers. After that, however, the majority of the team headed back out to the field, scaled the outfield wall, and jumped into the Chase Field pool.

This did not sit well with Arizona’s players, who were outspoken about their objections. Most notably, utilityman Willie Bloomquist called the Dodgers’ actions “classless” and also said, “I doubt the New York Yankees would do something like that.”

The Dodgers and the Diamondbacks, of course, were involved in an ugly on-field brawl in June, and in 2011, Clayton Kershaw and Gerardo Parra had a tiff over Parra admiring a home run, so it doesn’t take much to get these two teams at each other’s throats. As in those two incidents, neither team bothered to take the high road in this latest spat.

Bloomquist is right that the Dodgers jumping into the Chase Field pool wasn’t the most respectful act but the Diamondbacks could have prevented it by not being the first second-place team to be eliminated from a division race this season, or at least not letting that happen in their own ballpark. To the victors go the spoils, and for Bloomquist and company to squawk about an ultimately harmless act, to my eye, shows similarly poor sportsmanship and lack of class.

Having finished their season series on Thursday, the Dodgers and Diamondbacks will next meet on Opening Day in Sydney, Australia. That should be interesting.

Hopefully this classless act leads to them getting swept in the NLDS.

The pool is the signature of Chase Field, a unique showcase in all of baseball.  It was the D-backs that spontaneously jumped into the pool in 2011 to celebrate clinching the division title, a young franchise trying to establish an identity and tradition.  The Dodgers say that they "meant no disrespect", yet did just that by mocking the Diamondbacks and their fans.  Shame on the Diamondback organization for allowing this to happen. Karma's a b@#ch.

Yes, it was classless.  But also juvenile and just lame.  You guys are acting like a high school team on spring break.  Act like professionals and grown men.  Many of you are fathers and all of you are looked at by young people on how to act.  Grow up

classless? who would put a swimming pool at a baseball stadium? Lame! The dodgers are just showing people how stupid it is to have a pool at a ball park.

The D-Backs Organization telling the Dodgers to not return and celebrate on the field was classless. Who honestly tells another team that? Just a bunch of sore losers. If you didn't want the Dodgers celebrating, you should have beaten them. Otherwise quit whining.

Losers always whine about trivial things. So, what's new?

One of the D-backs should have taken a bat and a bucket of balls out behind second base and launched a few into the pool area!

Yeah, what I heard first was that the D-Backs had asked the Dodgers not to celebrate at their stadium, which would have been an absurd request.  If you win, you get to celebrate no matter where you are.  But taking it to the point where they leave the field and act like kids throwing a kegger in someone else's living room is unbecoming.  I'm sure the Dodgers wouldn't like it if a team that clinches the West there were to run into the stands carrying on like that.

You know what, Cliff? I'm going to disagree. You do something that you know will piss me off, and then when I get pissed-off, you turn around and blame me for getting pissed. I hate that crap.

The Dodgers TRIED to piss them off and it worked perfectly. And once it did, don't get upset at the Diamondbacks for getting pissed - just like the Dodgers wanted.

I'm sick of everyone taking sides on an argument and then switching sides in mid-stream after they've been proven wrong..

Surprised an old school guy like Mattingly would let them do that.

People should cut the Dodgers a break. They've been losers for so long, they didn't know what to do with themselves. That said, I salivate at the notion that they will lose in the first round.

I would expect something like this from a team with as little class as the Dodgers.

What happened to "Act like you been there before" ?  The Red Sox did the same last night and walked toward each other and shook hands.   That said, its still pretty funny!  Pool Party OK - Champagne in Locker Room - Bad Omen.

Arizona all but suggested this when they sent the letter requesting the Dodgers not return to the field after the game.  I mean really-- they probably would've preferred to get the the airport rather than hang out at some deserted ballpark.  But that letter probably sounded an awful lot like an invitation.

But Bloomquist's point about the Yankees seems pretty fair.  I mean, when I am worried about making a decision that might not be classy, the first thing I think to do is call A-Rod to set me straight.

You can take the baseball out of the kid … but not the kid outta baseball. The stadium had emptied, no one was around, and the Dodger Boys simply had FUN!  Know what that is Arizona?  'Course you don't … you're all too busy trying to kick every Mexican out of your state.

Truth is, NO ONE would even have known had some idiots with cameras not taped it.

Bottom line: The Dodgers were celebrating having had one of the most historic turnarounds in MLB HISTORY!  Think any team would have done that … even the Yankees, Mr. Bloomquist.

Swimming in the pool? Annoying at best, and worst.  I mean, maybe they pissed in the pool, which would have been better since they had just finished sh***ing alll over you on the field. Hahahahahaha!!!!

Go Dodgers!

P.S. Maybe the DooshBacks should heed the words of one of their own pitchers, who essentially said, Hey, maybe we oughtta have played better so WE could be the ones celebrating in OUR pool.

Get over it Arizona. Everyone else has.

O K,they might have celebrated a little too much, but if you don't want it to happen at your place just win. If i member right, you guys were winning the division, then something happened. Oh yeh,you got full of yourselves. Stop crying, and next yr play hard for a whole season.

Hey IndependentsDay,

What wears white and red and lives in the Middle of a useless desert?

A bunch of Arabs who wipe their a$$es with their hands

& A Team of Diamondbacks who just got their a$$es handed to them

I'm  happy for the dodgers, but seriously, they could have waited to get back to the hotel to hop in the pool.  If they had just won the nlcs, this would be more appropriate.  But probably not even then.

For all the D'Backs fans calling the Doyers classless - GET OVER IT! What a bunch of whiners. Game was over. Fans were gone. So what if they took a dip in your pool. Is this really any worse than them trashing your visitor locker room? (Which every team does)

I swear, some MLB fans are such ridiculous children sometimes. [Disclosure, I am an Angels fan and have no love loss for the Dodgers, but calling them "idiots" or "classless" is just immature]

IndependentsDay

Would Dodger fans say the same if the Diamondbacks were at Dodger stadium and stormed the .... um ... er.... well ...   there is nothing special at Dodger stadium to disrespect.

Celebrate on the field, no problem.  Pop champagne in the club house, no problem.  But, by jumping in the pool, they acted like a bunch of classless idiots.  That pool will have to be drained now to remove the stench and scum residue left over by the Dodger filth.

"... but the Diamondbacks could have prevented it by not being the first second-place team to be eliminated from a division race this season" That has nothing to do with it.

@salvaje50 an old school like Mattingly probably thinks its lame to have a pool at a ball park in the first place. he probably told them to do it.

@Jesus Hitler I don't think even Arod would do something as juvenile as hopping the neighbor's fence to party in their pool...

@Jules de la Zazette I have no problem with them celebrating, they earned it.  But, doing it by jumping in the pool was classless and disrespectful.

I hope that comment is directed at the team and not the nationality of their players. Th Dodgers are a worldwide organization represented by their diversity on the field. It seems as if all these DBags fans really want to knock nationality disguised with false anger directed at a harmless act...

Yah, just 60 years of storied tradition and one of the best parks in the MLB. You wouldn't know, because when the Diamondbacks were born, the Dodgers had already  won 6 World Series.

@UleNotknow

What do the Diamondbacks and a group of 12 year olds at band camp have in common?

They both get mad when the adults use the pool....

@iloveperfect @salvaje50

Your response is lame. Like Mattingly would use the reason there's a pool in the outfield as a good reason to give permission to his guys to go act like 8th graders at their first boy-girl party. Mattingly used to have class and show respect to his opponents and to the game. It's surprising that his team is acting this way.
